Is this picture of refugees from March 17 at the Franco-Italian border?

A photograph showing a large crowd of refugees supposedly walking towards France has been shared over 2,000 times this weekend from the Facebook page “SOS anti-white-racism“. According to this page, the image depicts thousands of refugees attempting to cross the Franco-Italian border on the 17th of March, near the commune of Menton in southern France. In reality, the photograph dates back to the 18th September 2015, and was taken near the city of Edirne in Turkey by a photographer from the Reuters news agency.

At the time the image was shot, the migration crisis was at its peak with thousands of refugees travelling from Syria, Afghanistan and other countries to Europe. Some reporters followed their journey, including Osman Orsal, a photographer with Reuters, who took this picture.  A closer investigation of the image clearly shows that the group is walking along the the Turkish O-3 highway that links Istanbul with Edirne, close to the Greek and Bulgarian borders. On the road sign we can identify directions to the “Otogar” in Edirne. A quick online translation tell us the word Otogar in Turkish translates to English as “bus station”.

Did an ally of the head of France TV accuse the public broadcaster of bias towards Macron?

A person claiming to be close to Delphine Ernotte, the president of France’s public broadcaster France TV, accused her of favouring Emmanuel Macron’s presidential campaign, in a video circulating on social media. However the authenticity of this interview, shared on March 16 on the Twitter account of David Rachlinel, the National Front Mayor of the town of Fréjus, is unclear.  Envoyé Spécial, the flagship current affairs show on France 2 [part of France TV], denied having conducted the interview when contacted by CrossCheck.

In the video, a man whose voice is distorted speaks with his back to the camera. “We are in constant contact with The Élysée Palace [the office of the French president]. Of course when [current President François] Hollande was no longer a candidate, obviously we had to at all costs support [Emmanuel] Macron with the clear objective of beating Marine Le Pen”, he says. “Macron and Delphine Ernotte have an openly strong friendship, they greet each other warmly, in an informal manner.”

Contacted by CrossCheck, David Rachline confirms having found this video “on the internet”, without citing other sources.

This is not the first time that a member of the National Front has accused Ernotte of supporting the ‘En Marche!’ candidate. On Sunday March 12, the National Front’s candidate for president, Marine Le Pen, said on the channel C8 that “the public broadcaster is on Emmanuel Macron’s side. Emmanuel Macron and Delphine Ernotte are good friends, they pat each other’s backs, they are informal, they kiss.”

Is this an authentic 1958 newspaper story about the wife of Charles De Gaulle?

A front page story from the French newspaper L’Aurore, dating back to May 20, 1958, has spread on social networks in recent days. Titled “Revelations about Yvonne”, it describes an alleged scandal involving General Charles De Gaulle and his wife. The clearly fabricated story bears many resemblances to the current allegations against Penelope Fillon – wife of French presidential candidate François Fillon.

The Aurore story reports that Yvonne de Gaulle earned “200,000 French francs a month while in London between 1940 and 1944″. The article is full of references to the Penelope Fillon affair. The quotation at the top of the page (“Yvonne has always worked by my side”) echoes a statement made by François Fillon on January 26, 2017: “My wife has always worked alongside me”.

In the right hand column, a quote attributed to De Gaulle reads: “Just like in 1940, I will not give in, I will not surrender, I will not stand down!”. Francois Fillon used those words on the 1st of March 2017 during an announcement that he would maintain his candidacy despite the fake jobs scandal.

The real edition of this story can be found on the website Price Minister where it is currently on sale.

Beyond the colour discrepancies between the original and fake front page headlines, there are clear similarities between the two pages. The font used is similar, as are the three photographs at the centre of the page. The advertisements at the top and bottom remain unchanged, and the section “L’Aurore à ses lecteurs” has not been modified.

Several web users took the manipulated front page as additional proof of conspiracies against François Fillon.

Did French channel C8 manipulate a news report on the National Front?

Several representatives of France’s National Front party accuse television channel C8 of having manipulated a report in order to discredit them by including testimony of a fake party-sympathiser making homophobic and racist comments. They say that Kevin, the party-sympathiser, is actually a “sound engineer at Canal+”, a channel that belongs to the same group as C8, and published a screenshot of his Facebook page where he presents himself as such. However, C8 and Kevin’s father deny these allegations and this screenshot was most likely fabricated.

(Translation: ‘The infamous racist militant and homophobe from the documentary on @C8TV is in fact a sound engineer for Canal+! Lagache is a scoundrel!’)

One of the National Front’s vice-presidents, Steeve Briois, admonished the C8 channel on Twitter, in a message that was retweeted hundreds of times. Marine Le Pen told AFP: “This is the type of manoeuvre that is used by the media. It’s shameful and I hope that they’ll be severely reprehended.”

C8 rejected the allegations in a press release published on social media. C8 said it saved the Facebook profile of the witness in question “just after the filming”, and that there was no mention of a “job or employer”. No modifications have been detected since and it appears that the screenshot was probably fabricated.

In the press release C8 also said that TVPresse Productions, the production company behind the report, “has, in their rushes, a non-tampered sequence in which an executive of the FNJ (organisation of Le Pen youth supporters) from Nice says that it was another executive who sent and recommended this person for interview.

Journalists from French newspaper Libération who had access to these images have confirmed the statement. They also contacted the person who published the Facebook screenshot, Cyril Martinez, the deputy FNJ departmental Secretary in the Alpes-Maritimes, who admitted not having verified the image’s authenticity.

When contacted by Buzzfeed, Kevin’s father denied that his son worked at Canal+, adding that “Kevin is known as being handicapped.. He was searching for his political identity and had been with the Republicans. Now he wanted to try out the National Front.”
